Through our Every Bottle Back initiative, we continue to make great strides in reducing our industry’s plastic footprint by ensuring our 100% recyclable bottles and cans are recovered and remade into new ones. Industry leaders, The Coca-Cola Company, Keurig Dr Pepper and PepsiCo, are partnering with prominent environmental and sustainability organizations—World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Closed Loop Partners (CLP) and The Recycling Partnership (TRP)—to work on innovative policies and programs to advance a circular system for plastics. Our goal is to ensure that plastic bottles don’t end up in oceans, rivers, lakes or landfills.
We’re voluntarily placing uniform messaging on our plastic bottles to make sure consumers know they are recyclable, including the caps, and should be recycled with the caps on so they can be remade into new bottles.
Public education is a key component of Every Bottle Back, and in 2021 we ran our most successful awareness campaign to date, promoting the unique value of our 100% recyclable bottles. Advertising on national television, Facebook, Twitter and Politico newsletters reached a wide swath of Americans locally and nationally, from parents to community leaders to policymakers. The message was widely seen and well-received: television impressions surpassed 1 billion while digital ads reached more than 56 million people, driving more than 200,000 visits to the Every Bottle Back website.

Our groundbreaking partnerships with The Recycling Partnership and Closed Loop Partners to revamp and reinvest in our cities’ recycling systems have been moving full steam ahead, with six new community recycling projects launched in 2021 for a total of 11 currently underway. So far we’ve committed $12.97 million to these cities, estimated to yield nearly 695 million new pounds of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) plastic over 10 years. Through these projects, we’re helping hundreds of thousands of households transition to larger-capacity recycling carts, learn what and how to properly recycle, and gain more equitable access to recycling.

We know there is not a one-size-fits-all approach to collection policy. That is why we are looking at all options on the table. As one example, an extended producer responsibility (EPR) system can be key to achieving a robust circular economy for our plastic in a way that supports our consumers, customers and communities. By transferring the costs of recycling to producers, EPR policies can provide more convenient recycling for consumers, increase recycling rates, reduce costs to local governments and ensure funds go back into the system to further improve it. We have partnered with World Wildlife Fund on joint principles for building a well-structured EPR system. Together we’re spearheading conversations with lawmakers on Capitol Hill and in states across the country that are exploring these policies.
